This struggle left a lasting impression with John and in 1988 he established The Stobart Foundation. The goal of The Stobart Foundation is to offer financial assistance to worthy, classically trained art students upon graduation from an accredited college. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over $375,000 in grants to qualifying art students. In 2010 John Stobart's paintings were the subject of two highly successful solo exhibits at the prestigious Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida and the renowned Butler Museum of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. The exhibit, The Grandeur of America's Age of Sail, honored John Stobart for his achievement and prominence in the field of fine art a rarity among living artists. As a result of these exhibits, there have been a number of requests from museums and other venues for similar exhibits that are now being considered. These events and the introduction and exposure of John's paintings to a wider audience has reinvigorated his philanthropic goals and in recent months much thought and planning has gone into how the Foundation will grow and expand its scope to fulfill John’s vision. After careful consideration, it has been decided by John and Maritime Heritage Prints to shift the focus to the Foundation and Stobart painting exhibitions. One of the primary sources of income for the future funding of The Stobart Foundation will be the current collection of John Stobart prints currently in the Maritime Heritage Prints inventory. As of December 31, 2010 John Stobart limited-edition prints are no longer be available for sale. On January 1, 2011 the entire inventory of prints became the property of the Foundation. This will begin an open-ended period of transition and restructure during which the prints will not be available for sale and will be held in climate-controlled vaults. Additionally, there will be no new print editions released by Maritime Heritage Prints or the Foundation, with the exception of those published for the benefit of charitable organizations. Maritime Heritage Prints will continue to sell Stobart books, DVDs and cards and The Kensington-Stobart Gallery in Salem, MA and The John Stobart Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard will remain active. We would like to thank you for your loyalty and support over the past 30 years. It has truly been our pleasure to work with you and we are grateful for your contribution to the Stobart legacy. We will continue to keep you updated about John’s lectures, his personal appearances, painting exhibitions and shows through our website, www.StobartFoundation.org. --John Stobart and the Staff of Maritime Heritage Prints |
